Martial Philosophy

We believe that all styles of martial arts have strengths that can be utilized when combined with another style or styles.  We reflect our love for the diversity of martial arts in our how we teach Tae Kwon Do and Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan).  As part of our martial heritage, we emphasize correct posture (a hallmark of Iyengar Yoga and GGM Rhee) combined with strong stances (characteristic of Southern Kung Fu and Tai Chi) to develop proper alignment of body to strengthen the musculo-skeletal system in a healthy manner.  Flexibility, an important quality in minimizing injuries and improving range of motion, is another important facet we emphasize through our Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, and Tai Chi trainings.

Our Approach to Teaching
We firmly believe that each individual has his or her own combinations of physical and mental talents, and it is up to us as the teachers and the student to work together in finding those talents to cultivate.  Whether we teach individuals or groups, we teach to each individual's physical abilities and learning styles.  While both of us are comfortable teaching separately, we are equally adept at co-teaching groups by complementing one another's teaching styles in the classroom, special seminars, and private lessons.

In the martial arts, talent is usually associated with more apparent athletic abilities such as speed in movement, quick reflexes, flexibility, muscular strength, and leaping ability.  Through over 20 years of teaching experience, we have found many other physical and mental talents that can be immensely beneficial to learning. These include mental malleability (open-mindedness to learn and adapt), videographic memory (learning quickly by doing), meticulousness (thoroughness in learning), tenacity, and muscular endurance (important for remaining in low stances and holding one's leg up for kicking).  We often found that these often overlooked talents can be more valuable for an individual's long-term success than the aforementioned athletic abilities which can be taken for granted.
